Episode 9: SIMONE RIDI

When did you decide to start shooting girls? What was your "mental process" behind the decision?

Actually I've started shooting male bodies… now I'm much more at ease with female ones. But it is not a matter of gender, but more an aesthetic factor. I like a body which communicates something, which has something to say, it doesn't matter if it is a male or a female one. Personally it's simpler to interact with my opposite sex. I have to admit an uncomfortable feeling at first. It appears I was doing something gross. In my shooting background there is always an erotic component which is not always reflected in the picture, but I think it is quite perceptible in the environment during the shooting.

It's inevitable some dynamics come to play a big part, and I think that whoever claims not to have a malicious component to shoot a naked girl not only is lying, but surely is missing something.

What's the first thing you do when you wake up?

I run. I'm always late. I run and I check my mailbox. I've always been in conflict with my alarm.

Does your mother appreciate your pictures?

My mom? Lets say she appreciates what I've shown her. I don't think she might like all the rest. She has always been supportive, but we think differently about art. I wouldn't feel comfortable to show her everything I've done. I don't think I'll ever been ready for this.

A movie that we should watch.

There are a lot of movies I have feelings for. And there are a lot of movies that if you haven't seen you might lose the friendship of the people you care. Among these I suggest the Tim Burton's movie, Big Fish.

Who is your "dream" model? Where would you love to set your shooting?

I'd like to shoot the couple Pitt&Jolie. Doesn't matter where, because they would be shot with a focus on their physicality.

Are you keeping your work secret to someone?

Sure. And I'm very good with that, especially when the work is a very private one.

Are you usually turned on by the model you are shooting?

A base of arousal is important. If I'm not involved, how can be who watch at the picture?

Name three photographers that you consider masters.

Francesca Woodman, David la Chapelle, Guy Bourdin. Each of them has leaded the way on unexplored paths. They have changed the conception of photography during different historical moments.

Did any model ever get mad at you because she was looking "ugly" in your pictures?

Never pissed off, but someone had complained that instead to cover the defects I magnified them. But this is my style. Everybody is able to take the good only. The defects are what make us unique, I could not live without them.

What do you do in your free time?

I do research. I go to exibitions, I watch movies, I read, I got distracted. Then I shoot. As much as I can.

What is the difference between a good nude picture and an amazing one?

It is in the feeling that the picture communicates. It is not difficult to take a good picture. A good technique and the right subject are enough for that. The difficult consists in taking a picture that lets you breathless, which is unexpected. Few people are good in this.

Who is, in your opinion, the most overrated nude photographer? And the one who is not appreciate yet?

A very overrated one, which doesn't really do much nude style though, is Terry Richardson. I know the question is another one, but I didn't want to lose the chance to create a controversial with such countercurrent statement.

Your biggest fault.

I'm lazy. I'd like to do so many things, but then I make just some of them.

What does your partner think about your work?

I'm single at the moment, so this is not a problem now. My former girlfriend probably thought I was just losing time. She was very pragmatic so she didn't really understand the need of my work. Investing so much money in something she considered to be just a hobby, something to do during my free time.

Do you remember your dreams in the morning? Are you able to interpret them?

No, I rarely do. They have to be really weird or magnificent to remain imprinted… and anyway I wouldn't be able to link them to a meaning. In addition, as I previously said, I'm always late in the morning, so, as soon as I wake up, I reset my brain.
